The Lachie Challenge

Please check out this give a little page to support our Lachie.

Invictus

This morning our Year 6s looked at the poem Invictus. Invictus means unconquerable and we talked about the Invictus Games where injured soldiers compete in various sports.

Miss Denley visited near the start of our session when we were a little stuck during shared writing. Then she returned later to be blown away by our completed poems!

Our School Korero or Narrative

This morning Steph, Leon's mum, came and talked to us about the narrative that has been developed for our school, particularly around our new buildings.

She began by talking about the location of our Kura, our school. Both Rāpaki and Tuahiriri Marae said that they were our Marae. Steph talked about our wetlands, our Kūkūwai (the name of our main building). Therefore this is our place, not just a single person's.

Steph's map of our area

Our two storey block is our Maunga, our mountain. We are part of the forest, Ngahiri. Our break out spaces in the Kūkūwai, are named after the birds that live in our wetlands.

Korero is a story, a knowledge that is passed forward. A Waharoa is usually an ancestor so it is unusual to have one at a school, but our Waharoa does not feature an ancestor at the top. Our Waharoa depicts where we are, and it is like a blessing to pass through and become part of our school. It is our welcoming gateway. There are two sides - Te Ara, the path, and Te Awa, the river. Both lead upwards to the three bags of knowledge, as we are a school. The geckos are the guardians on our pathway, while the eel are the guardians of our river.

Our special Waharoa

This is our story as a school, it is our responsibility to truly make it ours and to tell it to others.

Thank you Steph!

Algebra!

This morning was a little crazy in our class - there was chalk all over the floor and algebraic patterns everywhere.
We discovered...

  • Simone and Abaigh found out that after quadrillion comes quintillion
  • Leroy discovered that you can't swap a pattern within a pattern
  • Ben didn't want to stop because it was fun!
  • Some patterns look like hieroglyphics
  • AJ found out that if you draw a symmetrical Russian doll it can be turned into a rocket!
  • Isaac found out that 69 is sort of a mirror
  • Miss Perry reminded us about rules in algebra
  • Harvey loved building squares with matchsticks!
Some students persevered for ages on the same problem, while others cruised around trying everything.

Term 4!

My, how the year has flown!!

We have had such a smooth start to our final term together. We have been down to Hansen Park most days improving our Athletics skills in preparation for next Wednesday's event. Both classes have done an outstanding job at music with Mrs Murray. Yesterday we signed our students up for their speech presentation time over the next two weeks. We were so impressed that everyone was ready to go with this challenge! We also began discussing Passion Projects which will be a huge focus for this term. Exciting!!

Thank you to those families who have sent books in to share. Well done for having your sunhats organised too!

We look forward to the term together, let's make it great!
