NZ Sign Language

This afternoon we had Glen in our classes teaching us about NZ Sign Language. Glen works through Van Asch Deaf Education Centre.

We talked about the official NZ language of sign. The growth of technology has enabled many students who are deaf to be able to attend regular NZ schools.

We learned to sign our names and became more aware of Greta and Smilla's needs in class.

Bartering

Today Navigators 2 worked in teams and learnt how to barter goods.

They each started with a selection of goods. They had to work as a group to decide what the essential items they need to survive are.

By the end of their bartering all groups needed to have

  • Food to feed their group
  • Shelter from the weather
  • Essential items required for living
We were impressed with the students ability to negotiate and recognise the value of fair trades.

What is money?

What is Money???

Our definitions

Money is...

a form of trading that you use to get objects with.

what you use to pay for stuff and to actually live.

something generally a note or coin, although now a days people use cards, you exchange that to get the things you need and want.

what the world evolves around.

a thing where you buy it, it gets destroyed, and then you get another thing.

something that you use to purchase something.

things you buy clothes, water and food.

something you buy stuff you need to live with.

an object that keeps on passing on to other people.

something to buy supplies that you need to live with.

something that is made out of metal, paper or plastic (acrylic) that can also be in a bank account which is technology.

Was there always money in history?

Harvey told us a story about a Blacksmith and a Butcher trading meat for tools. A fair trade is when the two parties agree on the value of each item. People may haggle to find a fair trading value.

You do not need money to trade, even in this time. ie. trading cards, food.

We think that money did not always exist but the idea of trading is traditional, though often violence was used instead of mutual trading.

Ways our families trade- home kill meat, home grown vegetables and fruits, cars (trade-ins)

Real Life Learning

This afternoon we had a fabulous discussion about earnings, taxation and basic needs.

We found out that the average NZ wage is approximately $50,000, however, with a 30% tax rate this is reduced to $35,000. Arthur told us that countries that have higher tax rates have happier people living there.

We came up with a list of what we think the basic needs for people are - food and water, medication, rent or mortgage, insurance, clothes, electricity and vet bills.

In groups we then had to rank these in order of importance. Every group selected food and water to go up the top, however, then we discovered that rent and mortgage are automatically deducted from your bank account!

We had more of an understanding of why many families simply do not have enough money to cover their basic needs.

...to this week's amazing students!

Well done Arya, Kuhu, Isaac, Cooper, Felicity and Noah!!

Korfball Rm 16

Room 16 had a very hot and fast paced 45minutes playing Korfball this morning. We learnt some new skills and had fun working as a team. A few of our competitive streaks came out and the games were fierce.

 Lochie diving for the ball.

Ben was an amazing shooter!

 Great catch CJ!

Korfball

Today we had stunning weather for our first session of Korfball. This is a new sport that originated in the Netherlands.

We were taught the basics first - throwing and catching, attacking and defending, shooting techniques.

We then had some four on four games.
Harvey was everywhere on the court! Louis was a particularly annoying defender! Maya was super skilful, Leon was a great shot, Connor was the sideline supporter, and Jai and Hugo had awesome speed.

Swan Plants

In Navigators 2 we have three swan plants covered in little caterpillars.
We are in desperate need of more plants or branches from mature swan plants. If you have any at home please bring them along to help feed our hungry caterpillars.

Warriors

Our Year 6s wrote as warriors this morning, check out some of their phenomenal language.

Arthur
The warrior of my soul
Battling for tranquility
Against anger of the brain
Outwitting intelligence
For the good of serenity.

The shields of love protecting from swords of hatred
Spears of peace deflecting the forlorn arrows
Weapons of kindness can beat tools of death
The warrior of my soul strengthens my heart.

Danica
This warrior inside of you
Has been fighting to make others see
What a warrior you are!

Even though he or she is in darkness
To them there is still light.

Your life might be cruel and scary
But you must find the light
And defend yourself past the journeys.

The mountains you climb
Are a step closer to victory.

Franziska
Words hurt more than knives
Arrows shooting at you from every direction
The warrior of my soul.

The warrior of my soul,
Turning around the future
A happy life he lives now.

He was the one who
Others chose to follow
He was the man who chose to change other's future.

The warrior of my soul
Protecting country, people and land
The warrior's goodwill travels fast.

Isaac
As the day commences I'm prepared
This depends on my life and others
As I clasp my sword of strength and positivity
A looping arrow of negativity thrusts towards me
I hold out my sword
The looping arrow rebounds off my sword
And goes zooming back to the enemy
I look at my foe, his bloodshed on the ground
I did it, I saved my country.

Cooper
You are a warrior
The fierce warrior
Who is strong and powerful
But you have seen so many gruesome things happening to people
But it keep happening
Bloodshed from people having arrows thrown at them
But I fight because I want serenity
For my family and my friends.
