Real Life Learning

This afternoon we had a fabulous discussion about earnings, taxation and basic needs.

We found out that the average NZ wage is approximately $50,000, however, with a 30% tax rate this is reduced to $35,000. Arthur told us that countries that have higher tax rates have happier people living there.

We came up with a list of what we think the basic needs for people are - food and water, medication, rent or mortgage, insurance, clothes, electricity and vet bills.

In groups we then had to rank these in order of importance. Every group selected food and water to go up the top, however, then we discovered that rent and mortgage are automatically deducted from your bank account!

We had more of an understanding of why many families simply do not have enough money to cover their basic needs.
