St John in Schools

This morning we were lucky enough to have Paula from St John to teach us about first aid prior to camp.

We talked about sprains, broken bones, concussion, asthma, burns, choking, bee stings, allergies and other everyday occurrences.

We talked about allergies and needing to use an epipen.

If someone is having an asthma attack, we need to sit them up straight, ideally with their hands behind their head to open up their lungs. We need to make sure that we have our medication with us at all times when at camp.

We used a mannequin to show how to do back thrusts in case they are choking. We also touched on CPR.
Anika has learned heaps about first aid at St John Cadets.

If you are alone and you start to choke, throw yourself forwards against a chair or bench, something that is not going to move, to try to dislodge whatever is blocking your airway.

Concussion is caused by something hitting your head and your brain hits your skull.

We talked about using clean undies to stop bleeding!! If someone is turning pale, treat them on the floor as they have probably lost a lot of blood and are in shock.

When using a bandage, use a 'happy snail' bandage!

We practised putting bandages on our friends.

If someone has something sticking out of them causing a bleed, do not pull this out!

We talked about what we would make sure we had with us to survive in the outdoors.

This was such fun preparation for our upcoming adventures in Hanmer.
